Melissa Atkins Discusses Ongoing Automation Concerns Despite ILA’s 6-Year Labor Contract Approval
In the February 26, 2025, Supply Chain Dive article titled “ILA Approves 6-Year Labor Contract,” Melissa Atkins, a labor and employment partner at Obermayer, discussed the International Longshoremen’s Association’s (ILA) approval of a six-year labor contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). The agreement provides stability to East and Gulf Coast ports, alleviating concerns about prolonged uncertainty and the risk of another strike.
According to ILA EVP Dennis Daggett, the new contract requires USMX to consult with the ILA earlier before buying any software, hardware, or equipment. It also ensures there will be no fully automated terminals or equipment—defined as completely without human interaction—during the agreement’s term.
According to Melissa Atkins, even with the contract’s ratification, issues surrounding technology, automation, and artificial intelligence will persist
“This will remain a point of contention moving forward with all negotiations. Unions will continue to fight for job security, while management will continue to advance its technology to stay competitive. This will cause continued tension in future negotiations,” Atkins said.
