Melissa Atkins Quoted in the Insider Regarding the UAW Strike

Obermayer labor and employment partner Melissa Atkins continues her discussion about the United Auto Workers (UAW) union strike in an interview with the Insider. In the article, titled “The UAW Strike at Ford, GM, and Stellantis could change the entire automotive industry forever,” published on September 21, 2023, Melissa weighs in on the effect the strike would have on the entire automotive industry. Each of the Detroit 3 are spending billions of dollars to electrify their vehicle offerings and must weigh costly R&D expenses in the future with these increased labor costs.

“It’s at such a crossroads,” Melissa said. “There’s the change to electric vehicles, which would essentially take less employees, and they’re more expensive to build and they’re trying to find cheaper ways to do this. So they have to invest in innovation and different ways and different models. That costs money.”
