Obermayer Attorney Matthew Green’s Defamation Suit Dismissal Featured in Law360
Matthew Green, Deputy Chair of Obermayer’s Litigation Department, recently secured the dismissal of a defamation claim against a client involving an online restaurant review. The case was highlighted in Law360, where Matthew spoke about its timely implications.
“I think this was an important win, particularly in this climate, where social media and online reviews are now more common than ever. I’m particularly proud of my team for getting a defamation claim dismissed at the pleading stage, which, I believe, is one of the first in the District of New Jersey,” said Matthew in Law 360.
In 2018, Matthew’s client, Peter Ly, posted a negative Yelp review of the restaurant Ardiente in Philadelphia. In response, the restaurant sued him and another online reviewer for defamation. Last week a New Jersey federal judge dismissed the restaurateur’s claims, saying that “opinions do not constitute defamation.”
In addition to this case, Matthew has served as lead counsel in litigation relating to contracts, real estate disputes, non-compete agreements, and employment disputes. He also has broad experience in defending claims before state and federal courts in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
