Largest Law Firms in the U.S.: The 2024 NLJ 500

The NLJ 500 is the National Law Journal’s annual survey of the 500 largest law firms in the United States, based on data from the previous calendar year. This data is collected simultaneously with the Am Law financial figures. This year, ALM sent surveys to over 900 law firms to identify the 500 largest U.S.-centric firms by headcount. Firms ranked below No. 350 are grouped into two tiers instead of receiving individual rankings.

Lawyer totals are calculated based on the average number of full-time equivalent (FTE) attorneys from January 1 to December 31, 2023. For firms that did not participate in the survey, ALM estimates lawyer counts using information available on firm websites and in ALM’s Legal Compass database as of December 31, 2023. These estimates are then reduced by 5 percent to approximate the average FTE lawyers for the year.
